About the Program                         (To apply using ERAS)

The Rheumatology Fellowship offered by the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, includes:
  1. an opportunity for concentrated laboratory work in immunology and translational research
  2. an inpatient clinical experience at the UCSD Medical Center and the San Diego VA Medical Center
  3. longitudinal outpatient experience in the arthritis clinics at the UCSD Medical Center and the VA Medical Center
  4. experience with clinical and translational research testing novel therapies at the Center for Innovative Therapy (cit.ucsd.edu), including biologics and bone marrow transplantation.

Additional formalized training in clinical and translational research, as well as epidemiology and health services research applicable to Rheumatology, can be obtained through the NIH-funded CREST program at UCSD (crest.ucsd. edu). As a component of the CREST program, trainees have the opportunity to obtain either a Masters of Advanced Studies (M.A.S.) or an Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in conjunction with San Diego State University School of Public Health.

Clinical experience, including elective time, is offered in Pediatric Rheumatology, a charitable clinic for the underserved, imaging of rheumatic disease, and medical orthopedics. Direct training in articular application of ultrasonography is conducted by our faculty. Regular teaching exercises include training in Musculoskeletal Radiology, Rheumatology Journal Club, research and clinical teaching conferences and Medical Orthopedics/Sports Medicine.  The program is a minimum of two years; a third year is advisable for those desiring enhanced research experience. The partitioning of time between laboratory and clinical experience will depend on the interests and needs of the candidate. A combined Rheumatology and Allergy program is also offered.

Fellowship applicants must be on track to have completed three years of internal medicine residency (PGY 1-3) by the time the Rheumatology training program is to commence.

To apply for a Rheumatology fellowship, you must apply through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service, a service that transmits residency applications, 3 letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters/MSPE, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to Fellowship, Osteopathic Internship and Residency programs using the Internet. For inquiries regarding the fellowship, please email: raifellow@ucsd.edu
